Section 2 Living Things A.How are living things or organisms alike? 1.Living things are organized. a.Cell – the smallest unit of an organism that carries on the functions of life. b.Each cell has an orderly structure and contains hereditary material. Example: Muscle cells need to be worked hard to win at a sport.

Living Things respond Stimulus – anything that causes some change in an organism. –Example: Sun giving energy to a plant. Response – the way an organism reacts to a stimulus, often results in movement –Example: A plant leaning towards the Sun Homeostasis – maintaining the proper conditions inside an organism. - Example: A normal body temperature of 98.6 degrees

Living things use energy Example: Food gives humans energy

Living things grow and develop –Growth of many – celled organisms is due to an increase in the number of cells. Example: Growing 4 inches over the summer –Growth of one – celled organisms is due to an increase in size of the cell. –Development – changes that take place during the life of an organism Example: A puppy is less clumsy after one year –Living things reproduce Example: A cat having kittens

What do living things need? A place to live that provides for all of the organism’s needs. Raw materials like water, proteins, fats, and sugars
