Baroque c. late 1500s– early 1700s The Baroque style in Europe is characterized by an emphasis on the dramatic. Themes include scenes from history and religious stories. There are many portraits of royal families from this time period. The modern pencil was invented.

Dutch Paintings and artists Important Dutch artists include Rembrandt, Hans Holbien, the Younger and Vermeer who specialized in portraits and scenes from everyday life. Portraits became popular because there was the rise of a wealthy middle-class which wanted their images painted. (Remember this is before photography) They were masters at perspective and realism.

William Sydney Mount 1807-1868 A local Long Island portrait artist Lived and worked in Stony Brook Famous for his “genre” paintings of scenes from everyday life.

How to Draw a Portrait Make an oval shape for the head, like an upside down egg. Put the eyes on the ½ way line. Measure it! Its true! The face should be 5 eyes wide. The nose will rest on the line half way between the eyes and chin

The mouth will be half way between the nose and the chin. Ears should run from the eyes to the bottom of the nose. Add eyebrows and hair. The neck should run from the ears to the shoulders. The shoulders should be 3 heads wide.
