8  District/Quarterly Assessments- Letter Recognition, sounds recognition, decoding words, rhyming, and name writing  Weekly Phonics/Spelling Tests-Begins Nov. Most students have letters and sounds mastered by early December  DRA’s- Level 4/6 by the end of the year.

9  Play rhyming and segmenting games together  Have your child practice saying the names of lowercase and uppercase letters quickly  Have your child practice saying the sounds of letters quickly  Read, Read, Read!  Be a model and read to your child  Read with your child  Listen to your child read and encourage them to use their reading strategies when they get stuck  Have your child retell what he/she just read  Practice sight word lists sent home by teacher

10  Initial homework daily  Please leave homework in your plastic bag  Family Times Book  RAZ Accounts  Reading Strategies  Using your reading finger  Taking a picture walk  Story retell  If they get stuck helping with the sounds of the letters, not giving the whole word.  Math homework comes home on Mon. and Thurs. nights but if your child is struggling with a certain skill you may receive homework on other nights as well.

11  * Students use their data notebook throughout the day to focus on their own personal learning needs and goals.  Data notebooks are updated often and students graph their progress on a classroom graph.

12  Coupon books will come home next week in your child’s homework bag. Please remember these are skills that need to be mastered by the end of the year. Please take your time and try several times to ensure mastery before sending in each coupon.
