1 8 th Grade Week 23 Agenda & Objectives 2/4/13 – 2/8/13 Monday: Novel Study 8.4.10.10 By the end of the year, read and comprehend literature and other texts including stories, dramas, and poems, in the grades 6–8 text complexity 8.11.6.6 Acquire and use accurately grade-appropriate general academic and domain specific words and phrases; etc. Tuesday: Essay Timed Writing 8.11.2.2 Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation and spelling when writing 8.7.10.10 Write routinely over extended time frames (time for research, reflection, and revision) and shorter time frames (a single sitting or a day or two) for a range of discipline-specific tasks, purposes, and audiences. Wednesday: Poetry Analyzing & Writing 8.7.3.3 Write narratives and other creative texts to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, relevant descriptive details, and well-structured event sequences (a-e). 8.4.5.5 Analyze how a drama’s or poem’s form or structure contributes to its meaning. 8.11.5.5 Demonstrate understanding of figurative language, word relationships, and nuances in word meanings to extend word consciousness. Thursday: Novel Study & Vocab Review 8.4.10.10 By the end of the year, read and comprehend literature and other texts including stories, dramas, and poems, in the grades 6–8 text complexity. Friday: Quiz & Independent Reading

2 Daily Writing: Peace 2/4/13 Choose one prompt to respond to and explain with detail: “When the power of love overcomes the love of power the world will know peace.” ~Jimi Hendrix “Peace begins with a smile.” ~Mother Teresa

3 Monday: Novel Study Get out your binder! Hand in poetry handout with questions answered. While I check vocab part 4 and your poems: o Assemble/label your binder. o Draw a picture for each of the new vocab words. Planner: Journal: My Reactions Part 3 due tomorrow. Part 4 study guide questions & reading due Thursday. Quiz part 4 Friday. Book nomination no later than Friday, March 1.

4 Monday: Novel Study Mock Printz Committee Project Assignment o Go through nomination form. o EVERY student needs to read/nominate at least two novels this quarter. o You can nominate as many as you want (but try to be critical!!). o Try to read as many of the nominated novels as you can. o The student with: The most detailed and well-written nominations (at least 3), will win a prize. The most nominated novels read before debate day. o At the end of the quarter, we’ll come together and discuss/debate which novel should win our award. The more nominated novels you read, the more you’ll be able to discuss and the better your debate grade will be. o Your first nomination is due no later than Friday, March 1.

5 Monday: Novel Study 1.10 minutes: Draw pictures/illustrations based on each vocab word. 2.Play Pictionary with vocab 4! o Journal title: My Reactions Part 3 o Think about different perspectives…Do you have the same perspective on an argument with a sibling as they do? Imagine you are Margot or Peter and write about one of the days anne described in her diary. Tell about that day from another point of view and comment on Anne’s mood and behavior. o At least a page.

6 Daily Writing: WWYD 2/5/13 Choose one prompt to respond to and explain with detail: What would you do if a friend borrowed things from you but never returned them? What would you do if you were the teacher and everyone forgot his homework?

7 Tuesday: Writing While I check My Reactions Part 3, silently read and work on your study guide questions. Planner: Part 4 study guide questions & reading due Thursday. Quiz part 4 on Friday! Book nomination no later than Friday, March 1.

8 Tuesday: Writing 8A: Which essay was more organized? You’ll be writing a similar essay on a given prompt. First, write your thesis. o Remember! A is B because of X, Y, & Z. o Ex: Homework should be eliminated because it takes away from family time, it causes unnecessary stress, and it doesn’t accurately assess student knowledge. Next, write your outline. Finally, write your essay. This essay is TIMED. Your outline and finished rough draft is due by the end of the period.

9 Tuesday: Writing 8A: On separate pieces of paper due at the end of the period! Write a 3 part (5 paragraph) essay on one of these prompts: o What is the most important civic responsibility? Support 3 specific reasons why you believe this. o Who should be nominated as “Most Likely to Succeed”? Support 3 specific reasons. o Name one problem in the world and support 3 specific reasons why it should be eliminated.

10 Tuesday: Writing 8B: 1. 10 minutes: Ask one person to read your essay and fill out an editor’s check list. 2. Editors: BE SPECIFIC AND CRITICAL! Make edits to their paper if you can. OR underline sentences that “sound” 3.Rewrite your essay making revisions & edits as you go. Self edit! Write NICELY! 4.Put your finished essay in your portfolio.

11 Daily Writing: Imagination 2/6/13 Choose one prompt to respond to and explain with detail: “Imagination is more important than knowledge.” ~Albert Einstein “If everyone is thinking alike, then somebody isn't thinking.” ~George S. Patton

12 Wednesday: Poetry & Devices 1.Go through poetry worksheet and discuss. 2.5-10 minutes: Get feedback on your poems (I Am, haiku & limerick). 3.On separate pieces of paper, rewrite all three of your poems as nicely as you can, add illustrations or images, and add them to your writing portfolio. Planner: Part 4 study guide questions & reading due Thursday. Quiz part 4 on Friday! Book nomination no later than Friday, March 1.

13 Daily Writing: Random Thoughts 2/7/13 Choose one prompt to respond to and explain with detail: What do you think about the amount of violence on T.V.? What do you think about having set rules for people to follow?

14 Thursday: Review 1.While I check your homework due today & planner, review your vocab. 2.Go over Quiz Part 5. Has everyone taken it? 3.Any questions on study guide questions? 4.Watch the rest of the documentary. o Journal title: Documentary o What surprised you about Anne’s life? o What did you learn from this documentary? o How did the documentary help you better understand Anne’s feelings and writings? Planner: Quiz part 4 on tomorrow. Book nomination no later than Friday, March 1.

15 Daily Writing: Learn 2/8/13 Choose one prompt to respond to and explain with detail: What did you learn this week? What happened this week that you’ll always remember?

16 Friday: Test/Wrap up 1. Quiz! NO TALKING! When you’re finished, raise your hand, and read silently. 2.If you can use your time wisely and stay on task after I collect your quiz, we will play a game for the last 5-10 minutes of class. 3. Journal title: My Reactions Part 4 People have different ways of coping with sadness. What do you do when you’re feeling sad? Do you agree more with Anne’s approach or her mothers? Write about a time when you felt sad. Tell how you coped with your feelings. At least 1 page. Planner: Vocab part 7 & My Reactions part 4 due Monday. Book nomination no later than Friday, March 1.
