NASA Software Productivity Consortium Affiliation NASA Office of Safety and Mission Assurance Software Assurance Symposium September 5, 2001 Cynthia Calhoun NASA IV&V Facility Fairmont, WV (304) 367-8309 Cynthia.Calhoun@ivv.nasa.gov www.ivv.nasa.gov NASA IV&V Facility

NASA IV&V Facility 9/5/01OSMA SAS ‘012 Purpose Provide an avenue for NASA software programs to utilize Software Productivity Consortium (SPC) processes, methods, tools and services that will significantly improve their ability to build high integrity, reliable, and safe software intensive systems

NASA IV&V Facility 9/5/01OSMA SAS ‘013 Objectives Gain access to industry perspectives and plans for software and systems engineering process technology Provide SPC resources (guidebooks, technical reports, case studies, and training videos) via the NASA Software Working Group to NASA software engineering personnel Participate in SPC workshops, conferences, and executive roundtables to stay abreast of current software engineering technology trends Incorporate knowledge gained into existing and future software process improvement activities at the NASA Centers

NASA IV&V Facility 9/5/01OSMA SAS ‘014 History SPC membership originally established for NASA under the Glenn Research Center in June 1996 via a Center Initiative –Gretchen Davidian was NASA liaison to SPC NASA liaison position transferred to IV&V Facility in May 1997

NASA IV&V Facility 9/5/01OSMA SAS ‘015 SPC Overview Unique, nonprofit partnership of industry, government, and academia Develop processes, methods, tools, and supporting services to help their members and affiliates build high- quality, component-based systems, and continuously advance their systems and software engineering maturity Membership is open to all U.S. or Canadian-based companies, government agencies, and academic organizations –Currently stands at 95 members (e.g. - AT&T, Kodak, Unisys, Boeing, Draper Labs, FAA, Air Force, Navy, Army, Carnegie Mellon Univ, John Hopkins Univ, USC)

NASA IV&V Facility 9/5/01OSMA SAS ‘016 Benefits SPC membership will aid NASA programs with: –Integrating systems and software disciplines –Leveraging model-based and component-based development methods within an architectural framework –Complying with various software and system development standards, maturity models, and quality standards –Defining, collecting, analyzing, and applying measurements for management, process improvement, quality improvement, systems engineering, and software development activities –Understanding technology trends and the impact on NASA programs
