1 Editorial Cartoons Think about current issues in new ways using the AC Library database Facts on File Amarillo College Library

2 About editorial cartoons  An editorial cartoonist draws cartoon images that comment on a current political or social issue.  Many editorial cartoonists use their cartoons to present particular political points of view, both liberal and conservative, while others tend to illuminate current events without taking a specific political side on the issue.

3 Common elements of editorial cartoons Symbolism: Creating a visual image to depict an abstract concept. Exaggeration/Caricature: Exaggerating striking features of an image of a person or thing to provide an easily identifiable presentation of the original.

4 Common elements of editorial cartoons Analogy: Comparing two unlike things or events, like a historical event and a fictional event, to express an idea. Irony: Pointing out a contradiction between the appearance and reality of something, often to point out the absurdities in situations.

5 Assignment 1. Log-in to the Facts on File database using the same AC user name and password you use for AC Online and WebAdvisor.Facts on File database 2. Scroll down and pick a broad subject and then a sub-topic from options on the editorial cartoons page. Note: your instructor may want you to choose from a particular subject area. Read their instructions below.

8 Did you know? An Amarillo College graduate won the Pulitzer Prize in 1982 for his editorial cartoon and has also been a finalist more recently! He was named an Amarillo College Distinguished Alumnus in 1993. Ben Sargent Ben Sargent graduated from UT with a bachelors degree in journalism.
