3 What events led to The War of 1812?
US shipping was being harassed, and American cargo was seized. Impressment of American sailors Many British sailors left British ships and joined American crews. British Navy kidnapped American sailors and had them join the British Navy Embargo Act of 1807 Stop trade with Europe (North) dislike this Tension with Native Americans in the West.

5 Madison and The War of 1812 Madison believed Britain was a threat
June 1812—Madison asked Congress to declare war on Britain War Hawks Democratic Republicans Favored war, even though it hurt the east Land hungry—they wanted Florida and wanted lands in southern Canada

8 What were some of the benefits of going to war with Britain?

9 What were some disadvantages to going to war?
Not everyone in the US wanted to go to war Federalists did not want war! Military was small Navy was quite small only 22 ships Britain was a great Superpower and could crush us like a bug and we could lose territory that was gained in the Treaty of Paris or the Louisiana Purchase

War started with Invasion of Canada 1. USA burns York (now Toronto) US hoped Canadians would welcome them and join them to expel Britain from North America…this did not happen 2. Battle of Lake Erie Oliver Perry defeated the British This gave the US control of Lake Erie Fast frigates (warships) in the Atlantic also destroy British ships.

11 The Roof is on Fire… In August 1814, British Forces Sailed into Chesapeake Bay and capture Washington D.C. They burn the White House and the Capitol Madison and Congress Barely escape

12 Oh Say Can You See… Unlike D.C., Baltimore was ready for the British
The City militia inflicted heavy casualties on the British After bombarding Fort McHenry on September 13, 1814 the British abandon the attack Francis Scott Key witnessed the bombardment and penned a poem which becomes the National Anthem.

13 Treaty of Ghent Ended the war
Negotiated in Europe; signed on Dec. 24, 1814 The War ended in a stalemate—no party gained or lost any territory.

14 Battle of New Orleans Fought after the treaty was signed (but not ratified) Why was New Orleans important? Pirates and Frontiersman fought alongside US troops Made Andrew Jackson a National hero and household name Ensured treaty ratification

15 Why was the War of 1812 important?
Gave the United States a National Identity Allowed us to continue westward expansion Federalists (who were against War) lost power War Hawks grew stronger and took control of Democratic-Republican Party More settlement in the west Strong Navy and Army Creates a hero in Andrew Jackson –he will become President in 1828.

Answer the following in two paragraphs: Consider the causes and costs of the war, the Treaty of Ghent, and the impact of the war on American people. Was the war of 1812 worth fighting? (paragraph 1) Did it help or hurt the young United States. (paragraph 2) State your opinion and provide plenty of supporting detail.
