7. H ISTORIA (F LORIDA ) Several indigenous tribes lived in Florida before the arrival of the Spanish explorer, Juan Ponce de Leon, in 1513. The Spanish claimed Florida until 1763 when it was ceded by England. But it didn’t last because Spain took advantage of England’s preoccupation with the American Revolution and again captured Florida. Florida became a U.S. state in 1845.
