4 Rules and Regulations What you need to know to compete: The theme for the contest is “Healthy Living.” You are encouraged to use images from farmers markets such as fruits, vegetables, seasonal images, family, community, etc. You MUST include the words “2008 Chicago Farmers Markets” in your design. All entries should be 8.5 inch width by 7.5 inch height and must be matted. If you would like to submit your design for the contest, you must complete an Entry Identification Form and attach it to the back of your drawing.

5 What is a reusable bag? Why should we use them? Reusable bags are, simply put, bags that can be used again and again. Reusable bags can be used instead of plastic bags that are distributed at most grocery and retail stores. Each high quality reusable bag you use has the potential to eliminate an average of 1,000 plastic bags over its lifetime. The bag will pay for itself if your grocery store offers a $.05 or $.10 credit per bag for bringing your own bags. The average family accumulates 60 plastic bags in only four trips to the grocery store. Plastic bags cause over 100,000 sea turtle and other marine animal deaths every year when animals mistake them for food.

6 Plastics are forever! Plastics do NOT biodegrade. Rather, they photodegrade. A process, where sunlight breaks down plastic into smaller and smaller toxic pieces.Once brought into existence to tote your purchases, they'll accumulate and persist on our planet for up to 1,000 years. Introduced just over 25 years ago, the ugly truth about our plastic bag addiction is that society's consumption rate is now estimated at well over 500,000,000,000 (that's 500 billion) plastic bags annually, or almost 1 million per minute. Worldwide, an estimated 4 billion plastic bags end up as litter each year. Tied end to end that’s enough to circle the earth 63 times.

7 What are Farmers Markets? Why are they important? Farmers Markets are public markets where farmers and other vendors sell produce, such as fruits and vegetables, directly to consumers. Farmers have direct access to the markets which can help to increase farm income. Consumers have access to locally grown, farm-fresh produce and the opportunity to personally interact with the farmer who grows the produce. Many urban communities where fresh, nutritious foods are hard to find, gain easy access to food. Farmers markets also help to promote nutrition education, wholesome eating habits, and better food preparation, as well as boosting the community’s economy.
