Arthropod – Jointed Foot
2
There are 6 types of invertebrates: SpongesCnidariansWormsMollusksArthropodsEchinoderms
4
Arthropods An Arthropod is an invertebrate with an exoskeleton, segmented body and jointed legs. There are 4 Sub Phylum's 1. Crustaceans 2. Spiders, Scorpions, Ticks and Mites 3. Centipedes and Millipedes 4. Insects
5
And one Class that is Extinct…
6
All Arthropods have an Exoskeleton An exoskeleton is a hard outer covering.
8
Molting When they grow too big for their exoskeletons arthropods will molt – or shed their skin and grow a new one.
9
Segmented Bodies All Arthropods have segmented bodies. Usually in 2 or 3 segments.
10
Sub Phylum Myrapods Class Chilopods :Centipedes one pair of legs on each segment, capture prey with poison and claws and live in dark warm places. Class Diplopoda :Millipedes two pair of legs on each segment, eat plants, no claws and live in dark warm places. Giant Millipede
11
Other Characteristics of Arthropods Arthropods have segmented bodies Compound eyes Jointed legs Hearts that pump blood thru their bodies Reproduce sexually
12
Sub Phylum Crustacean A crustacean is an arthropod that has a hard, exoskeleton, two pairs of antennae, and a mouthparts for crunching and grinding. Examples: Crab, Lobsters, Barnacles and Shrimp
15
Sub Phylum Arachnids Spiders, Scorpions, Ticks and Mites Have 8 legs Have 8 legs Have a body divided into two parts… Have a body divided into two parts… Head and Cephalothorax Head and Cephalothorax
16
Spiders Eat bugs or small invertebrates (birds, mice) Can make webs out of silk spinning spinnerets Spiders bite and poison their prey Breath through book lungs Worlds biggest spider
18
Subphylum Uniramia There are more kinds of insects than there are all other animal species all together. There could be times as many 300 million insects as humans on Earth Their bodies are divided into three parts. Head, thorax and abdomen.
19
Subphylum Uniramia Insects have six legs. When insects change their appearance dramatically it’s called metamorphosis. There are two types of metamorphosis Complete Complete Incomplete Incomplete
20
Complete Metamorphosis In complete metamorphosis, insects like butterflies and moths have four stages of development. Metamorphosis Video
21
Incomplete Metamorphosis Incomplete metamorphosis happens in grasshoppers, termites, and dragonflies. Young look like adult, keep growing and molting into adults.
22
