3. Resources for Land Scramble Research The following resources are available for your use during your Africa Land Scramble research. Copies of the student atlas (use the political, physical, and thematic maps of Africa) Chapters 19-22 in the geography textbook on the regions of Africa and their resources Thematic maps on Google Earth (see next slide).

4. OPEN GOOGLE EARTH Go to my homework page on the Bigelow Middle School website. Go to List Server (under Daily Homework). Click on the link to Thematic Maps of Africa (this is a kmz, or Google Earth, file). Click the arrow to the left of Thematic Maps of Africa to display the list of thematic maps. Check the boxes (one at a time!) to view the various thematic maps. The thematic maps are… Water Crisis map Vegetation map Precipitation map Natural Resources map Physical map Climate map

5. SURVEY THE LAND Where will you and your country mates establish your empire? Consider the following: Climate Access to water (fresh water and coastline) Proximity (closeness) to Europe and other nations for trade Fertility of land – which areas are best for growing crops of different kinds Proximity to other areas you choose as you create your empire USE ALL AVAILABLE RESOURCES FOR YOUR RESEARCH! Take notes on your choices. Be prepared to defend why you choose each area.
