DE Science Elementary “5-Minute Prep” For Sound, Heat, and Light Sound > Sound Waves

Sound Waves – The Big Ideas Sound is energy that travels in the form of waves away from a vibrating object. Sound waves travel through all three states of matter. Sound waves cannot travel through a vacuum, which has no matter.

Sound Waves – Prior Knowledge Students have been interacting with and fascinated by sounds since birth. It will help for students to use the Fun-damental, Sound, Heat, and Light, to review sound. It will be helpful if students have:Sound, Heat, and Light listened to different types of music. played with different toys that make sounds.

Sound Waves – Common Misconceptions Sounds cannot travel through liquids and solids. –Reality: Sound waves travel through all three states of matter. For example, whales communicate via sound waves that travel in the ocean. Sound waves are transverse waves (like water and light waves). –Reality: Sound is a form of energy that travels in waves that are compression waves.

Sound Waves – Using DE Science Content When you close this presentation, you can review the following recommended resources for Sound Waves. Exploration: Sound WavesSound Waves Reading Passage: Where’s the Sound?Where’s the Sound? Video: How is Sound Made? How is Sound Made? Video: SoundSound Use the PowerPoint version of this presentation for hyperlinks to these resources or you can get to them through the browser or search feature.

Sound Waves – Instructional Ideas Make simple instruments. (Watch the video, Sound: A First Look, for ideas of how to make homemade instruments.) Sound: A First Look –Have each student determine how sound is being made and in which direction the sound waves are traveling.

Sound Waves – Instructional Ideas Before conducting sound investigations with the class, show the first screen from the Exploration: Sound Waves to the class on a projector or print out copies for each student. Sound Waves –Ask student to predict and draw the predictions for how the sound waves will travel with each sound maker. –After several sound investigations, have the students refer back to their previous predictions and alter them if needed. –Have students complete the Exploration and draw the sound waves for each sound maker.
