Sentence Parts: Complete Subject/Complete Predicate The complete subject is tells what the sentence is about. The complete predicate is the part of the sentence that says something about the subject. Example: The chocolate cake tasted very good. Write the sentences below. Underline the complete subject once and the complete predicate twice. 1. The school bus went quickly over the road. 2. The gentle giant in the yellow hat climbed down the large tree.

Sentence Parts: Simple Subject/Simple Predicate Simple Subject: main word in the complete subject; must be a noun or pronoun. Simple Predicate: main word in the complete predicate; also known as the verb Example: The chocolate cake tasted very good. Write the sentences below. Underline the simple subject and circle the complete predicate. 1. The teacher graded the homework papers. 2. Jeff drove the car to the store.

Sentence Parts: Direct Object The direct object is a noun or pronoun that follows an action verb. It is never in a prepositional phrase. To find it, say “subject,” “verb,” “what?” Example: Dad parked the car. Write the sentences below. Circle the direct object in each sentence. 1. The team won a trophy in the tournament. 2. We will watch the game on television.

Sentence Parts: Indirect Object The indirect object is a noun or pronoun that comes before a direct object. It is never in a prepositional phrase. To find it, say “subject,” “verb,” “direct object,” “to or for whom or what” Example: Bill lent Henry his jacket Write the sentences below. Circle the indirect object and underline the direct object. 1. Lisa read the children a story about a bird. 2. We mailed grandma a Christmas present.

Sentence Parts: Predicate Nominative The predicate nominative (PN) is a noun or pronoun that follows a linking verb. It renames the subject To find it, say “subject,” “linking verb,” “what?” Example: He is a nice guy. Write the sentences below. Write PN above the predicate nominative in each sentence. 1. Scooby Doo is a dog who solved crime. 2. The play is a comedy.
