A Typical Day in Kindergarten at Memorial-Spaulding

Good Morning! The children arrive at school by bus or car and get themselves ready for the day. Allowing the children to do things by themselves encourages their independence and gives them a sense of pride.

Daily jobs such as signing in and answering the question of the day foster responsibility and create a sense of community. Morning Routine Having a consistent arrival-time routine helps the children transition from home to classroom.

Morning Meeting We start each day with a greeting, share, activity and reading a morning message. This will also be a time to implement our anti-bullying curriculum called Open Circle.

The Kindergarten Literacy Block

Shared Reading During shared reading, the teacher and children read big books and poems.

During guided reading, teachers work with students to guide them in using their emerging reading strategies. By using books that gradually increase in difficulty, students work at their own levels and feel very successful! The end goal is for students to become confident, proficient readers who LOVE to read! (WE WONT START THIS UNTIL LATE JANUARY OR EARLY FEBRUARY) Guided Reading

Interactive Writing This is a time we share the marker, tap out sounds, and write important labels to use in the classroom.

Workboard/ Literacy Centers Workboard/literacy centers provides meaningful reading and writing experiences as students work to apply skills and strategies learned during shared and guided reading lessons. Typical workboard/literacy center jobs may be the ABC, writing, listening, poetry, science, and reading around the room.

Multi-sensory activities promote phonics, phonemic awareness and handwriting skills. Fundations Students experience the joy in being able to manipulate sounds and letters to create and read words.

Writing Workshop Children have a lot to say about the world and they can express themselves on paper through inventive spelling and drawing. Writing Workshop builds on the childrens strengths, provides meaningful, structured opportunities to write, exposes them to beautiful literature and actively teaches the skills and strategies that writers need.

Snack/Lunch Kindergarteners eat snack in their classrooms. Kindergartners eat lunch in the cafeteria. Some students buy lunch, while others bring it from home. Lunchtime is a great opportunity for students to talk and build social skills.

Recess Children learn important social skills on the playground. Recess helps to develop skills such as cooperating, helping, sharing, and problem solving.

Math Kindergartners participate in the Everyday Mathematics and the Kathy Richardson program. The children do many hands-on activities involving counting, numeration, measurement, geometry, sorting, adding subtracting and data collecting.

Science and Social Studies Kindergartners explore and discover the things and people around them and make connections between their own personal lives and the larger world around them. In science some of the the things we study are, ladybugs, bulbs, the engineering of blocks, sand and water. Our social studies units are, seasons, All about Me, families, and important people, dates, and holidays throughout the year.

Technology Kindergartners will be given the chance to explore and use computers and IPads for different projects – creating and writing stories and making thinking visible in math. http://nspt4kids.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/child-with-ipad.jpg
