Ита́лия - the state in the south of Europe, in the centre of the Mediterranean. The country is named on этнониму a tribe италики. Borders on France in the northwest, with Switzerland and Austria in the north and with Slovenia in the northeast. Internal borders with Vatican and San Marino. Sardinia and a number of small islands occupies Apenninsky peninsula, Padansky plain, southern slopes of the Alpes, islands Sicilies.

Italy - mainly highland. In the north - southern slopes of the Alpes with the higher point of the Western Europe mountain Mont Blanc (4808), to the south - Padansky plain; on peninsula - mountains the Apennines (the higher point - mountain Monte Corno-grandee, 2914). As the Apennines share on: Ligurijsky, Toskano-Emilianskie, the Umbro-Marksky, Abrutstsky, Kampansky, Lukansky, Kalabrijsky Apennines and mountains Sabini. In east part of peninsula there is a peninsula Gargano, in the southeast and the southwest of Salentine peninsula and Calabria, accordingly. Active volcanoes (Vesuvius, Etna; earthquakes are frequent. The washing seas - from the east the Apenninsky peninsula is washed by Adriatic sea with gulf of Venice in its northern part. Strait of Otranto between Apulia and Albania connects Adriatic sea with Ionichesky. Between Apulia and Calabria the gulf of Taranto deeply takes root into a land. Very narrow strait of Messina separates Calabria from Sicily, and Sicilian (or Tunisian) passage in width of 135 km - Sicily from the North Africa. Tyrrhenian sea represents the pool of the triangular form framed with Sardinia, Corsica, Tuscan archipelago, Apenninsky peninsula and Sicily. To the north from Corsica there is Ligurian sea with gulf of Genoa. In a northeast part of island Sicily mountains Nebrodi, and in a southwest part of island Sardinia plain Kampidano are located. Climate Climate the Mediterranean. Average temperatures of January from 0 to 12 °C, July 20-28°C; deposits mainly in the winter (600-1000 mm a year, in mountains places over 3000 mm).

Administrative division State capital - Rome. The country is divided into 20 areas (from which 5 have the special status), 110 provinces including as an administrative and territorial unit. In autonomous regions there are parliaments - country councils and the governments - джунты, possessing powers in local government questions
