5. The Destruction of Pompeii In 49 CE Mount Vesuvius erupted. It destroyed the small city of Pompeii in southern Italy. Over 2,000 people were killed by the smoke and burning lava. It also “preserved” many of the buildings, paintings and bodies for future generations.

10. Roman Mosaics The Romans were noted for their MOSIACS. Mosaics are pictures made of small pieces of stone or colored glass. These small pieces are called TESSERAE. Today we often see mosaics made of tiles in homes or restaurants.
