Capstone- Teaching with Common Core in a school garden. By: Susan Spigelmire

Problem Teachers do not know how to create new Common Core lessons using the school garden.

Audience All TK-5 grade teachers at Harvest Valley Elementary The teachers vary in ages, technology use, education, and knowledge of gardening.

Solution Create a learning module to teach teachers of different grade levels how to use the garden to teach different common core standards. Provide example lessons and the discuss the standards they address. Discuss the new Common Core standards

Methods/Procedures Needs analysis to see what subjects teachers are most interested in using the garden to teach. Learner analysis to find out more about the target audience. Research the Common Core standards for those subjects and grade levels. Creating/testing the learning module.

Learning Theories Gagne’s nine steps of instruction Cognitive theory-scaffolding, direct instruction with guided practice, use different types of media to reach all learners.

Final Deliverable An interactive website that teachers can select a subject and their grade level to learn about different things that can be taught in a school garden. Sample lessons and how they are linked to the Common Core Standards.
