11 The High Dam at Aswan was completed in 1970. It was built for several reasons. What are they? The river Nile use to flood large areas every year and destroyed houses and crops. The Aswan High Dam controls the waters of the Nile so that they now run regularly all through the year. Electricity can now be made from the water which rushes through the base of the dam. About 20-50% of the electricity which Egypt needs is produced from the dam. First Second

12 As a result of the dam, the water level of the lake was going to rise by 63 meters. It would be necessary to move 53,000 people from their villages. Some important old temples were in dander and would be covered by the water of the new lake. What problems were caused by building the High Dam?

13 Why were the old temples so important? Because they dated from about 1250 BC. One of the most important temples in danger was the one at Abu Simbel. It was carved in the rock and had on the outside four large stone statues, each of which was 20 meters high.

17 One possible version: Dear editor, I went to visit the Great Wall with my parents during the summer vacation. But some of visitors wrote something and their names on the bricks of the Great Wall with a knife. I don’t know why the people did that. It is bad manners for them to do so. The Great Wall is a famous place of interest in China and it has a long history. It should be protected by everyone. I’d like to discuss the problem in your newspaper and is that right? Li Hua
