Fast Changes Foldable Earth Science
2
Hurricane How: low pressure area in the ocean
Winds 39mph and higher: tropical storm Winds 74mph and higher: hurricane Where: above warm ocean water Results: Flooding, Rain, Strong Waves, Winds, Beach Erosion Precautions: move to high ground, tie down loose objects or move them inside, tape/board up windows and stay away from windows
3
Tornado How: within a severe thunderstorm High speed spiral winds
Warm/moist air rises and meets colder air Where: Midwestern States Results: tear down houses, devastates communities, wraps cars around trees Precautions: basement (if you have one), cover head, move away from loose objects, move away from windows
4
Lightning/Thunderstorm
How: moist air rises and begins to cool Water falls (precipitation), pulling cold air with it Thunderhead clouds Where: Everywhere Results: flooding, lightning, hail, winds, possible tornado Precautions: stay inside, stay away from tall objects
5
Earthquake How: Earth’s plates move (along fault line)
Where: where 2 plates meet Example: San Andreas Fault in California Results: can build up or destroy land, homes and communities are destroyed, ground cracks, can cause tsunami (giant ocean wave) if eruption is under water Precautions: take cover under heavy desk, table, or in a doorway; avoid falling objects
6
Volcano How: magma pushes up through cracks in Earth’s crust
Where: wherever there is a volcano (could contain weak spots) Results: eruption from volcano causing lava to flow out, destroys communities Precautions: none – evacuate when there is an eruption
7
Blizzard How: violent snow storm produced by cold air and moisture
Where: anywhere there is cold air and moisture Results: a lot of snow Precautions: stay inside, stay off the roads
8
Flooding How: caused by large amounts of water going on land
Where: anywhere there is a lot of rainfall or ocean surge Results: destroys land and houses Precautions: watch for rising water and stay away
9
Landslide/Mudslide How: caused by force of gravity pulling down rocks, soil, and mud Where: anywhere there has been a lot of rainfall Results: destroys hills, cliffs, and houses Precautions: stay away from unstable land
