“Why study chemistry?” I asked you to identify the top 10 issues that should be addressed to improve the quality of life globally – before the middle of this century. Four out of these 10 are chemistry related and a couple others have scientific connections. Every person on this earth deserves an opportunity to be educated so they can at LEAST somewhat understand these huge issues and the science behind them. Some of my students today will be the scientists (etc) who will work to solve these problems for us! water environment poverty terrorism/war disease education democracy population food energy
6
Atomic structure and Electron configuration The Mole and Stoichiometry Nuclear chemistry Measurement Some Topics
7
Faster pace: 1 extra unit – electrochemistry A couple of extra topics per unit Labs: More frequent and more challenging Full, typed laboratory reports More: Projects/papers Readings MATH Examples and problems: less repetitive, but more difficult SAT II prep Higher standards for responsibility and collaboration

Learning Goals Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving Inquiry labs, strategies, and practicing word problems Data Analysis Graphing and analyzing data sets Drawing Conclusions Connecting laboratory work and real-world examples to chemistry concepts learned in class ****Error Analysis***** “Why did the experiment go wrong? WHY WHY WHY, like EXACTLY? What caused it? What would we do differently next time“ Scientific Writing

A = 100% - 90.0% B = 89.9% - 80.0% C = 79.9% - 70.0% D = 69.9% - 60.0% F = anything below 59.9% Homework Packets (15%) Due on the day of a Unit Test Assignments are on Sharepoint Labs, Projects, Readings (35%) 1 major lab write-up every 3 weeks or so Tests (50%) Every 3 or 4 weeks Review sheet, practice tests, etc on Sharepoint

Encouragement to attend block 7 and to be an advocate for him or herself Allow him/her quiet time and space to do their homework Allow him/her computer and printer access to complete laboratory reports Check Aeries so you’re aware of his/her scores and performance Assist his/her with study group formation (pizza, transportation, etc) Please share your personal chemistry experience with your student. Chemistry was a struggle for us adults, too!
