1 Home and Personal Communication Systems Lesson 5 – Personal Connections

2 Starter You have a really good video you have taken with your friends. You want to send it to each other. Suggest three different ways you can get it to one another quickly and what hardware you need to do it.

3 Objectives Understand different personal communication systems are available. Know what personal communications connections are available. Be able to select the most appropriate method of personal communication.

4 The connections you need to know Wireless (Wi-Fi) Bluetooth WiMax GIS (Geographical Information System) GPRS (General Packet Radio Service)

5 Bluetooth Uses Radio Chips Uses little power. Instant configuration. Simply scans and find a name. Enter a pin to securely connect. No in-line of sight. You do not have to be sat next to someone. Very secure technology. Any device can communicate together if they have Bluetooth. Relatively slow connection of 1Mbps, compared to infra-red. Bluetooth can open the door for security breaches, once access is granted. Potential for transmission to be intercepted. Illegal transmissions (music etc) Cyberbullying

6 Where for art thou Bluetooth Phones for transmitting songs, videos etc. Phones for hands-free systems (Bluetooth head set etc). Smart-Phones for connecting to a computer (to use the 3G connection as an internet connection on the computer). Smart-Phones for synchronising data (calendars, e-mail etc). Car voice control systems. Music streaming to speakers. The list is potentially endless…

7 I use Bluetooth for… Quick discussion: What do you use Bluetooth for? Is there anything you use it for illegally? How would you improve Bluetooth?
