Forces on a Parachute LO: to explain how changes in forces on a parachute effect it’s speed TASK: friction stories Remember the bigger force should have a bigger arrow
2
Parachutes A parachute slows a falling person from 120mph to 10mph so they can land safely. How do you think a parachute achieves this (think about the last few lessons)
3
Can you explain the forces on the parachute? (video) Remember 1.Unbalanced forces = accelerate or slows down. 2.Balanced forces= steady (same) speed or stationary
4
EXT FORCES ON A ROCKET TRAVELLING INTO SPACE
5
Complete worksheet Ext questions: 1)How can a parachutist increase their fastest speed (terminal velocity)? 2)Force diagrams for a rocket taking off

Summary Learning Logs: In your book, answer 3 of the following statements: 1.In the lesson I learnt…. 2.I was surprised by…. 3.One thing I liked most about today was…. 4.The main thing I want to know more about is….. 5.I was interested in…… 6.One thing I’m not sure about is…..

Making a parachute

Parachute testing Weigh an approximately 50g piece of plasticine. Drop this from a height of 1.5m and work out it’s speed. Do this 5 times and work out an average speed. Construct a parachute for the plasticine and repeat the above, calculating an average speed.
