4. Which punishments fit the crime? Complete the sheet -What punishment should fit the crime in your view? What other crimes can you think of? What punishments do you think they should have? Does prison work?

5. Why do people commit crimes? What are the reasons? Who commits the most crime? Men, Women or children? What should we do with children who commit crimes? How should they be treated? Why do some people think they should be treated harsher than adults?

6. What sentence should they have received? The mother of baby Peter was ordered to serve at least five years in jail for causing or allowing the death of her 17-month-old son. Her boyfriend was jailed for 12 years Their lodger was jailed for three years All played a role in the death of the baby

7. Why are children treated so differently? The legal age for prosecution in Norway is fifteen years old. The death of this five year old Silje Raedergard shocked and outraged the local people, yet the two boys that so cruelly ended her life did not have any punishment. 'In Norway the boys were treated as victims, not killers... they were free to return to school within a week of the incident occurring'

8. In Britain the killers of this little boy were sent to prison and years later may be moved to Australia to start a new life. Some people say they should stay in prison forever! Yet adults who kill children do not receive as much hatred – why is this? Who has got it right? Britain or Norway?

9. What does punishment mean? What does retribution and rehabilitation mean? Should we be building more or less prisons? What should the future of prisons be like? What is the reality of prisons in the 21 st Century? What is life like for the families – children - of people in prison? (men and women) Which punishments do you think will stop them from committing a crime again? Explain your answers.
