Vision for Enterprise Data Management Basic Concepts of Linear Referencing Data Integration Data Analytics Next Steps 3 Topics

Vision Diagram 4

Linear Referencing System Basic Concepts Linear referencing is defined as a method for storing geographic data by using a relative position along an already existing linear feature. Linear Referencing Methods Route Number and Mile Marker Intersection and Offset Street Name and Address Number * Latitude and Longitude (X, Y) 5

Previous Data Integration Pattern More than 600 data exchanges in place Worked well for expediency, but created long term problems 6

Data Integration Concept Data Exchange Broker Financial Data HR Data Data Exchange Broker Target System 7

Data Integration Objectives 1234 Reduce point-to-point interfaces Minimize replication of data over and over Report success and failure of data transfers Internal / external system integration 5 Facilitate real-time data exchange 8

Current Data Integration Reducing hard dependencies between systems Reusable ETL scripts = less custom code Standard Data sets copied out of source only once Errors are caught before the data goes to the target systems All data exchanges are catalogued – and pre-approved by business owners DEB 9

Data Integration 10

Temporal Data Analysis Business Objectives… 1.The ability to answer temporal questions linking the road network as well as the transportation business events such as speed zones, crashes etc. 2.Ability to meet compliance and auditing requirements 3.Historical querying is complicated and unavailable to most 4.Ability to recover quickly during system crash or user errors 5.Ability to locate data as of a previous date. E.g. VDOT will use this for pavement data synchronization. 11

Temporal Data Analysis Oracle Solution Transparent to application Updates applied from point in time Ability to work with geospatial data 12

Time Slider & Geo-database Archiving ESRI Features Visualizing, analyzing, and animating location and time-aware data provides opportunities for powerful storytelling…and a new dimension to managing data Persists all edit history of a feature (i.e., roads) in the default version of the data. Allows for visualization of the data at a specific date/time. Dynamic - safety service patrols, snowplows Distinct - crashes, bridge inspections Static - traffic volumes Structural - routes, jurisdictions, census data 13

ESRI Solution Time Slider Example – Mobile Phone Subscriptions Source: ArcGIS.com Tools for desktop and web applications 14

Next Steps Incorporating Smart Phones and Tablets for data collection and information dissemination Dissemination of geospatial information from the cloud 15
