FACES OF PERU

There are many different types of transport in Peru, from bikes, to buses to getting lifts on the back or on top of trucks. There are also taxis and tuc tucs (like a motorbike but with seats on the back).

This old women is about 70 or 80, she couldn´t remember which year she was born. She has 12 children, many of whom are professionals. She walks one and a half hours down the mountain every day to tend to her animals and crops. She lives at about 4000m and she speaks Spanish and Quecha. We stopped to chat to her beside the road.

This lady is wearing traditional Peruvian clothes, which combine colonial clothes with Inca influences. Notice the blanket on her back. Blankets are used to carry everything from children to crops. I even saw a women carrying a lamb on her back!

This little girl is at primary school. She lives in the house opposite which is also a hostel and a shop. The house is made out of mud bricks. She can ride a horse bareback. We stayed at the hostel for one pound a night and I practised my Spanish on her.

We shared our lunch with this lovely old man. He makes his living carrying items for people on his bike. He charges 25 pence per item. His bike cost 20 pounds to buy. The bike has 3 wheels.

The owner, Adrian (far left) owns a successful restaurant that cooks food on hot stones. Adrian also owns a hostal and has 9 motorbikes. The boy next to Dave is 12 years old and works in the afternoons at the restaurant. His family live far away and he lives with another family so he can go to school. The man on the right makes leather clothes.

We stopped to chat with these two women and had lunch together. The lady with the white hat on owns a tiny shop selling fizzy drinks. The women also grow crops to sell. They are sorting out white beans and will sell them for 5p a kilo to a wholesaler in Lima.

These women live in the mountains and wanted us to take their photos and send it back to them. They grow corn and potatoes.

The girls range from 5 years old to 8 years old. We met them during their break time when they were buying their break time snacks next to the school. The girl in red lives with her grandmother so that she can go to a good school. Her mother and father live in the jungle area of Peru called the Selva. She sees her mum during holiday times.

When these boys are not at school they shine people´s shoes in the main town square. If they work all afternoon and evening they can earn up to one pound a day to help their families. Both boys dream of becoming lawyers one day. They are 12 years old.

This is Cesar with his family. Cesar helped to mend my bike. He is a metal artist. He built his children´s bikes for them from scratch. Both him and his wife went to University to study Economics.

This boy is responisble for looking after the animals that belong to his family. We saw him herding a few pigs, sheep and cows. We watched as the donkey escaped and ran down the street making a lot of noise which was very funny, that is why he is laughing (after he caught the donkey!).
