Energy What is Energy

Energy: The ability to do work or the ability to change and move matter. Without energy, the world could not function. Changes could be: 1. Shape 2. Speed 3. Direction 4. Composition

2 Types: Kinetic Energy: The energy of motion and found in things that are moving. Potential Energy: Energy that is stored. Stored by position, shape, or chemistry. KE VS. PE

Relationship Between PE and KE PE KE What is happening to the PE and KE as the soccer ball falls to the feet of the mid-fielder? What about the PE/KE graph could be considered misleading?

9/30/14 Day 29

Science Starter: In honor of National Preparedness Day, tell me what to do in case of a: 1. Fire 2. Tornado 3. Safety Lockdown

Agenda: 1. Energy notes in ISN p.17 2. Worksheets: Energy Transfer Diagrams Energy Types

9 Forms: Mechanical: Mechanical motion Energy that moves objects due to an object’s motion or position. http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:10-pin-bowling-strike.gif

Examples of Mechanical Energy

…continued Sound: Sound Results from the vibrations of particles in a solid, liquid, or gas. http://www.ear-hearing-doctors.com/

…continued Electromagnetic (AKA – Light or Radiant): Electromagnetic Transmitted through space in the form of EM waves. Includes energy from gamma rays, x-rays, UV rays, visible light, infrared rays, microwaves, and radio waves. http://physics.phillipmartin.info/physics_electromagnetic_spectrum_m.htm

…continued Thermal (AKA - Heat): The heat energy of an object determines how active its atoms are. More thermal energy = more rapid movement.

…continued Electrical: Energy caused by the movement of electrons.

…continued Gravitational: Results from vertical position.

…continued Elastic: Elastic Results from stretching or compressing.

…continued Chemical: Energy that is available for release from chemical reactions.

Examples of Chemical Energy

…continued Nuclear: Found in the nucleus of an atom. Energy is released when an atom’s nucleus breaks apart (fission) or when the nuclei of two atoms come together (fusion).fission

Identify the Form of Energy Electromagnetic (radio waves) Chemical (food) Thermal (burner increases movement of H 2 O molecules) Mechanical (moving gears) Electromagnetic (electricity)

Measured: Joules or Calories A Joule is the amount of energy needed to lift one apple from the floor to the table top. A Calorie is the amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of water by 1˚C.

QUIZ TIME! What type of energy cooks food in a microwave oven? ELECTROMAGNETIC ENERGY What type of energy is the spinning plate inside of a microwave oven? MECHANICAL ENERGY

QUIZ TIME! Electrical energy is transported to your house through power lines. When you plug an electric fan to a power outlet, electrical energy is transform into what type of energy? MECHANICAL ENERGY

QUIZ TIME! What energy transformation occurs when an electric lamp is turned on? ELECTRICAL ENERGY  ELECTROMAGNETIC ENERGY

What types of energy are shown below? Mechanical and Thermal Energy (Don’t forget friction)

What type of energy is shown below? Chemical Energy

What types of energy are shown below? Electrical, Mechanical and Electromagnetic Energy

What type of energy is shown below? Chemical Energy (yummy)

What type of energy is shown below? Thermal Energy

Energy Transfer (Conversions): A change from one form of energy into another. Often changes into more than one form. Energy Transfer Diagrams (ETD) are used to show flow of transfer.

Identify the Energy Conversions: The apparatus to the right was placed into a bell jar. What energy conversions take place when it is operating? 1. Chemical energy (in the battery) 2. Electrical Energy (electricity moving through the wires) 3. Sound Energy (noise coming from the buzzer) Battery Wires Buzzer

Identify the Energy Conversions: Chemical E  Heat E + Light E

(Kinetic E) Mechanical E  Gravitational E

Energy Efficiency

Law of Conservation of Energy: States that energy is neither created nor destroyed. Energy can be changed from one form to another, but ALL the different forms of energy must add to the same total amount of energy.

Sources: Renewable: Energy from a source that is not depleted when used. Examples include; Wind, Hydropower, Hydrogen, Solar, Geothermal, Biomass

…continued Nonrenewable: Energy from a source that is not readily or easily replaced. Examples include: Propane, Petroleum, Coal, Natural Gas.

ISN Check Blue Grid: 10/2/14 (Thursday), p. 17 Write a Summary at the bottom (1-2 sent.) Write 3 questions using the Green grid at back of ISN 1 Level One Question 1 Level Two question 1 Level Three question

Worksheets: Energy Transfer Diagrams Energy Types Due tomorrow

Class Closer: What plan do you have in place at home in the event of a tornado?
