Bell Ringer Tuesday Sept. 3rd -Grab your folder and answer the following on your Bell Ringer sheet in one of the boxes labeled Tuesday: Jason’s wife is sick. Jason works at a pharmacy. The drug that would cure Jason’s wife is too expensive for him to afford. He could steal the drug or he could save money to buy the drug at a later time, but his wife might die by then. What should Jason do? EXPLAIN your response.

Notebooks On the Notebook handed to you do the following: 1.ON THE FRONT COVER -WRITE YOUR FIRST AND LAST NAME -WRITE YOUR CLASS PERIOD

2. ON THE FIRST PAGE IN YOUR NOTEBOOK: - ON THE TOP OF THE PAGE WRITE: TABLE OF CONTENTS -ON THE FIRST LINE ALL THE WAY TO THE LEFT WRITE: TOPIC -ON THE FIRST LINE ALL THE WAY TO THE RIGHT WRITE: PAGE # - NUMBER THE PAGE 1-15

3. STARTING ON THE BACK SIDE OF THE TABLE OF CONTENTS PAGE: NUMBER YOUR FIRST 25 PAGES ON THE BOTTOM LEFT HAND SIDE ***BE SURE TO NUMBER BOTH SIDES***

The Metric System SI (System International)

Metric System Used by every country in the world, except the USA. Always used by scientists. Based on the number 10, so it’s easy!

Measuring Length Length= the distance between 2 points. Base unit= meter (m) Use rulers and meter sticks to measure

Problems: We need more accuracy o We can’t measure everything with just base units o We need prefixes!

Metric Units The basic unit of length in the metric system in the meter and is represented by a lowercase m. Metric Units 1 Kilometer (km) = 1000 meters 1 Meter = 100 Centimeters (cm) 1 Centimeter= 10 Millimeters (mm) 1 Meter = 1000 Millimeters (mm)

Metric Units 1 Kilometer (km) = 1000 meters 1 Meter = 100 Centimeters (cm) 1 Centimeter= 10 Millimeters (mm) 1 Meter = 1000 Millimeters (mm) Which is larger? A.1 meter or 105 centimeters B. 4 kilometers or 4400 meters C. 120 centimeters or 120 millimeters D. 1200 millimeters or 1 meter

Measuring Length Ruler: http://www.k12math.com/math-concepts/measurement/ruler-cm.jpg How many millimeters are in 1 centimeter? What is the length of the line in centimeters? _______cm What is the length of the line in millimeters? _______mm What is the length of the line to the nearest centimeter? ________cm HINT: Round to the nearest centimeter – no decimals. 1 centimeter = 10 millimeters 2.8 28 3

Bell Ringer Wednesday, Sept. 4 th A.1 meter or 150 centimeters B. 5 kilometers or 4400 meters C. 12 centimeters or 20 millimeters D. 1200 millimeters or 2 meters Grab your folder and get right to work! Answer the following questions on your bell ringer sheet WHICH OF THE FOLLOWING IS LARGER?

Lesson 2: Temperature, Volume, and Mass T. Trimpe 2008 http://sciencespot.net/

Measuring Temperature Temperature is the measure of the average heat energy Base unit= degree Celcius (°C) 0°C= freezing, 100°C boiling Use thermometers to measure.

Find the temperature of each thermometer A ECBD 19 °C4 °C5 °C44 °C22 °C

Measuring Mass Mass is the amount of matter (stuff) in an object. Base unit = gram (g) Use scales to measure.

Metric Units Of Mass 1 Kilogram (kg) = 1000 Grams (g) 1 Gram= 100 Centigram (cg) 1 Gram (g) = 1000 Milligrams (mg) Which is larger? A. 1 kilogram or 1500 grams B. 1200 milligrams or 1 gram C. 12 milligrams or 12 kilograms D. 4 kilograms or 4500 grams

Reading a Triple Beam Balance

Volume is the amount of space an object takes up. Base unit= Liter (L) Use a beaker or graduated cylinder to measure. Measuring Volume

Metric Units 1 kiloliter (kL) = 1000 liters (L) 1 liter (L) = 100 centiliters (cL) 1 Centiliter= 10 milliliter (mL) 1 liter (L) = 1000 milliliters (mL)

Read the measurement based on the bottom of the meniscus or curve. When using a real cylinder, make sure you are eye-level with the level of the water. What is the volume of water in the cylinder? _____mL

Thursday September 5 th Bellringer 1.What is the base unit for length? 2.What is the Boiling point temperature in Degrees Celsius? 3.When measuring volume, what is the name of the curve that you look at to get an accurate reading? 4. If a pencil’s length is 150 millimeters how much would that be in centimeters?

Friday September 6 th Bellringer 1.Name 1 reason why scientists use the metric system to measure things? 2.If a pencil’s length is 12.5 centimeters how many millimeters would it be? 3.How many milligrams are in 1 gram? 4.If a rope is 1 meter long, how long would this be in centimeters.
