Problem Solving- Focus on composing Mark has 3 tens rods and 7 ones units. Karen has 4 tens rods and 8 ones units. Draw a picture to show how many units they have in all. Remember to rename your units. Evan saw wrote 35 sight words. His best friend Cal wrote 19 sight words. How many sight words did they write in all. Show how you solved your problem. Note to parents: I’m sure you called it “carrying” or “carrying over”. Some people call it regrouping or renaming. Another term we use is composing. Please know that they are all the same. I promise- we don’t change it just to frustrate you.
12
Addition Strategies Use your strategies to add the following numbers: Use your strategies to subtract the following numbers:
13
Problem Solving- The “give one” strategy “Give one” from one number to make an easier number to add: Example: 59 + 33 59 + 33 Give one from here to here 60 + 32 This is what you get- easier to add 60 + 32 92 39 + 74 159 + 115 49 + 26 Explain why the “give one” strategy works.
14
Problem Solving- Adding with composing Show a number sentence and solve for both. Show how you regroup. Using base ten blocks, draw an example of how to add 123 + 237. + +
