Applying to Residencies ERAS (September & October) Apply directly to program directors by using the ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service). ERAS transmits residency applications, Original Documents for Letters of Recommendation (LoR) and Medical Student Performance Evaluations (MSPEs) as well as other supporting documents to residency program directors via the Internet. http://www.ecfmg.org.eras EducationUSA.state.gov

ERAS and Residency Programs Program coordinators can access the system and check applicants’ requests. Programs categorize applicants according to: ECFMG test scores Previous clinical experience Recommendation letters Community service (volunteer work) etc. EducationUSA.state.gov

Residency Programs Applicants are then invited for interviews. Interviews (November, December, & January) Applicants need to be qualified to meet the selection criteria. Programs/Specialties EducationUSA.state.gov More chances: Internal Medicine, Family Medicine and Pediatrics than other fields like Orthopedics or Ophthalmology. Regular programs (3 - 4 years) Internal Medicine, Family Medicine and Pediatrics Surgery is 5 years, Psychiatry is 4 years and Neurosurgery is 7 years. For subspecialties like Cardiology, applicants have to take a 3 year program of Internal Medicine and then Cardiology for another 3 years.

Medical Research/ Research Fellowship For physicians who want to focus on medical research and papers to be published and not clinical work, ECFMG certification is not required since there is no patient contact. EducationUSA.state.gov

Graduate Degree Foreign medical graduates may also apply for graduate degree programs in fields such as: Public Health, and medical sciences like physiology and anatomy. If no contact with patients is involved, ECFMG certification is not required but the GRE maybe required for a Master's and Ph.D. degree. EducationUSA.state.gov

Observership Program Hands-off experience to assist IMGs who wish to observe clinical practice in a U.S. setting. Usually consists of attending morning rounds, seminars, student lectures and attending case presentations. No patient contact and cannot perform physical examinations. EducationUSA.state.gov

Clinical Externship EducationUSA.state.gov Clinical rotations for International medical graduates that give solid experience. Responsible for duties as: presenting patients, assessing histories and performing physical examinations, as well as other tasks assigned by the Attending Physician.
