Types of Maps Physical Map- Shows Physical characteristics of the land, Ex: water depth, Land elevation Political Map- Shows individual countries, state and international borders. Which map would you use to find… Capitals of South America? How far above sea level the country is? The deepest oceans? Which country an island belongs to?

Features of an Atlas Some atlases show the following information Climate- What you can expect the average weather conditions would be Population- whether the population is dense or not Environments- a detailed look of the surrounding areas Economic activity- which employment seems to be the highest in certain areas.

Practice What is the climate of France, Sweden, Italy? Which area is more densely populated; North, South East or Western Europe? What is the population density of Moscow? What are the environments in and around the United Kingdom, Spain, Finland? Which country has little or no economic activity? What are the three largest industries according to the map?
