What is an allusion? An expression (or phrase) designed to call to something to mind without mentioning it directly. Effective allusions have to be common enough that a majority of the readers will notice it. Common Allusions: – The Bible – Famous historical figures and events – Greek Mythology – Cultural references

An Elizabethan Audience would know… Bible stories Mythology Astrology Seasons, life cycles Historical events of their time and well as important people in London.

Modern audiences know… Pop culture Historical and political figures Important historical events Movies Many still know the classical allusions too.

Cultures make a difference Every culture has their own traditions and their own allusions. Western Culture = Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and the United States We share a lot of the same history so we have a lot of the same allusions in out literature.
