SANREM Landscape Systems and Technology Transfer Ecosystem Scale SANREM CRSP 2006 Annual Meeting, Blacksburg, VA. April 18-20, 2006 Andrew Manu: Iowa State University

SANREM CRSP 2006 Annual Meeting, Blacksburg, VA. April 18-20, 2006 Ecosystem (Ecological System) “Any unit that includes all of the organisms (i.e., the community) in a given area interacting with the physical environment so that a flow of energy leads to clearly defined trophic structure, biotic diversity, and material cycles (i.e., exchange of materials between living and non-living parts) within the system” (Odum, 1969).

Potential disagreement among various stakeholders about how ecosystem should be defined within a research or development program Ecosytems definition?? SANREM CRSP 2006 Annual Meeting, Blacksburg, VA. April 18-20, 2006

SANREM Thesis The Nested Landscape Management System SANREM CRSP 2006 Annual Meeting, Blacksburg, VA. April 18-20, 2006

Ecosystem Scale Accomplishments by Quarters Identification of Graduate Assistant Assembly of interested faculty and staff of Iowa State University and other international collaborators Developed framework to conduct literature search and field surveys on ecosystem management First Quarter SANREM CRSP 2006 Annual Meeting, Blacksburg, VA. April 18-20, 2006

Second Quarter Began the effort to develop a synthesis report on ecosystems and ecosystem management by reviewing literature on: SANREM CRSP 2006 Annual Meeting, Blacksburg, VA. April 18-20, 2006 Ecosystem management and sustainable natural resource use Recent trends in natural resource management and recognition of the incorporation of livelihoods strategies and participatory processes in ecosystem management schemes

70 were entered into the SANREM CRSP meta-database 400 sources of literature were reviewed Process led to the identification of the potential components of ecosystem management Second Quarter (cont’d) Incorporation of indigenous knowledge into sound ecosystem research, development, and management SANREM CRSP 2006 Annual Meeting, Blacksburg, VA. April 18-20, 2006

Use of agroforestry as part of effective ecosystem management Application of integrated modeling in ecosystem analysis and management Management and sustainable use of forest ecosystems by surrounding communities is among the most contemporary conservation challenges SANREM CRSP 2006 Annual Meeting, Blacksburg, VA. April 18-20, 2006

Goals, objectives, and tasks to achieve objectives Interdisciplinarity of actors Management alternatives to achieve ecological sustainability and integrity Project achievements and impacts Lessons learned Success assessment indicators Development of Case Studies to Characterize Critical SA And NRM System

Development of Case Studies to Characterize Critical SA And NRM System Community based ecology/NRM in Mount Cameroon SANREM CRSP 2006 Annual Meeting, Blacksburg, VA. April 18-20, 2006 Goal: To secure long-term conservation of biodiversity and rainforest genetic resources and strengthen the role of local communities in managing the forest ecosystem
