Matter and Energy Chapter 1
2
Matter – anything that has mass and takes up space
1.1 Vocab Matter – anything that has mass and takes up space Mass – measure of how much matter an object has
3
Weight – the downward pull on an object due to gravity
1.1 Vocab Weight – the downward pull on an object due to gravity Volume – the amount of space an object takes up. (for a regular solid length x width x height)
4
Atom – the smallest basic unit of matter
1.2 Vocab Atom – the smallest basic unit of matter Molecule – two or more atoms that have bonded together
5
How do you find the volume of an irregular shaped object?
Bell Work 10/28/10 What is the volume of a box that is 10 cm long, 3 cm wide, and 2 cm high? How do you find the volume of an irregular shaped object? Give three examples of matter.
6
Bell Work 10/29/10 Write the sentence and fill in the blanks
1. Anything that has mass and takes up space is___________ 2. ______ is the amount of matter in an object 3. The _____ is the standard unit used to measure mass. 4. The downward pull of Earth’s gravity on an object is the object’s ___________ 5. A _____ is used to measure weight.
7
Bell Work 10/29/10 Decide if these statements are true or false. If false correct them. Substances you can see are matter, but substances you cannot see are not matter. Mass and weight are the same thing. Formulas can be used to calculate the volume of many solids with a regular shape.
8
1.3 Vocab Element – consists of atoms of only one type. Compound – a substance made up of 2 or more different types of atoms bonded together. Mixture – a combination of 2 or more substances. Do not combine chemically and can be separated by physical means.
9
Homogeneous mixture- a mixture that is the same throughout
Types of Mixtures Homogeneous mixture- a mixture that is the same throughout Heterogeneous mixture- a mixture that is different througout
10
States of matter – different forms in which matter can exist.
1.4 Vocab States of matter – different forms in which matter can exist. Solid- a substance that has a fixed volume and a fixed shape.
11
Liquid – has a fixed volume but does not have a fixed shape.
1.4 Vocab Liquid – has a fixed volume but does not have a fixed shape. Gas – has no fixed volume or shape.
12
Bell Work 11/3/09 Give 2 examples of a heterogeneous mixture. Give 2 examples of a homogeneous mixture.
13
Bell Work 11/1/10 What is a mixture? Give an example
What is a compound? Give an example What is an element? Give an example Give 2 examples of heterogeneous mixtures Give 2 examples of homogeneous mixtures.
14
Bell Work 11/4/09 List the three states of matter and fill in squares showing the movement of the particles. Explain whether or not smoke from a fire is considered matter or not.
