Nyumba Activity Objectives Content Objective: Construct a Maasai nyumba out of karatasi with a kuta, milango, and pa’a. Language Objective: With a partner, compare and contrast your nyumba and write a paragraph using nyumba, kuta, milango, and pa’a. Does that help?

Nyumba Activity, the SIOP Way Building Background: In Africa, what kinds of houses do people live in? (Discuss with a partner.) In Tanzania, the Maasai people live in a round one-room house made of tree branches covered in cow dung. It is called a nyumba. The roof is a pa’a, the walls are kuta, and the door is a milango. Let me show you what they look like.

How to Make a Nyumba We are going to make a Maasai village by making nyumbas out of paper instead of branches and cow dung. 1.Cut one piece of paper into a long rectangle. 2.Cut another piece of paper into a circle and cut out a small triangle.

How to Make a Nyumba 1.Cut one piece of paper into a long rectangle. 2.Cut another piece of paper into a circle and cut a small triangle out of it. 3.Draw tawi on both pieces and a milango on the long rectangle. 3.Tape the short ends together. 4.Form the circle into a cone to make the pa’a and tape it. 5.Place the pa’a on top of the kuta. 6.Find a partner who is finished and compare and contrast your nyumba, using the words nyumba, tawi, kuta, pa’a, and milango.
