What information should be on Food Labels Some information that appears on food labels must appear by law under the Food Labelling Regulations 1996 The following must appear by law on a food label & most foods: The name of the food The name & address of the manufacturer, packer or seller of the food. The country of origin- where the food or some of the ingredients in it came from. Instructions about how to use or cook the food, if appropriate (how long, at what temperature or microwave oven power setting. A list of ingredients in descending order. The quantity of certain ingredients eg( the percentage amount of meat in the sausage) The shelf life shown by a use by or best before dates How to store foods where the foods should be stored, such as in a cool, dry place.

Nutritional Labelling Under the Food Labelling Regulations 1996 & the EC Nutritional Labelling Directive, guidance is given about how nutritional information should appear on food labels Nutrition labelling is only compulsory on foods where a claim has been made about the nutritional value, such as ‘high in fibre’ or ‘low in fat’ These are the guidelines that should be followed when giving nutritional information; The following nutrients should be shown as amounts in every 100g or 100mls of food. Energyas Kj &kcal Protein in grams (g) Carbohydrates in grams of which sugars should br shown in grams Fat in grams of which saturates should be shown in grams. Fibre in grams Sodium in grams

Nutrition labelling Con’t The following nutrients can also be shown on the label. They must be shown if a claim is made about them: Sugars Cholesterol Polyunsaturates Vitamins in milligrams or micrograms Minerals in milligrams or micrograms Starch Mono – unsaturates The nutritonal information should either be set out in atable or written out as a list (not both together}. Although not legal many retailers & manufacturers will now label foods that contains nuts to warn people who are allergic

Other information that appears on food labels Vegetarian society, means suitable for vegetarians International recycling symbol. International symbol to remind people not to drop litter. The red tractor is an independent mark of quality that guarantees to the consumer that the food has been produced to high standards. The freedom mark is a registered mark in the UK which indicates that the food has been produced to higher animal welfare standards & supported by the RSPCA.
