Ancient Palestine Jews entered Palestine in 12 th century B.C. from southern Mesopotamia. Believed the land was given to them by God. Palestinians were Philistines from Greece who settled at the same time.

Kingdom of Israel and the Diaspora 200 years later Kingdom of Israel created. Kingdom was very large, included the land of Palestine. A.D. 73 Roman Empire conquers Philistines and Jews, scatter Jews throughout the world (called Diaspora).

Evolution of Palestine Philistines remain in region, take on name of Palestinians. Remain for 1000 years. 7 th century, Arabs move into the region. The Arabs change the face of Palestinian ethnicity and religion.

Zionism 19 th century, nearly 2000 years of persecution, European Jews want to return to Palestine. Zionists – Jewish who promoted an independent Jewish state, and were willing to fight for it.

Jewish Immigration to Palestine 1914 – 10% of pop. is Jewish. 1917 – Britain defeats Ottoman Empire, gains control of Palestine. Began work on making a nation for the Jews. Palestinians were furious. By 1929 – Battle between the two groups begins. 133 Jews, 116 Arabs killed in first year.

Brits Try to Fix It 1936 – Arab Revolt – 3 years of violence caused Brits to look for a fix. Attempt to split the country in half. Arabs were not happy. 1939 – Restrictions lower number of immigrants.

WWII 6 mil Jews murdered in Holocaust. Jews fled Europe for safety in Palestine. Support grows due to Holocaust. British lose control of borders, hand over to UN. Arabs did not want to lose more land, Jews wanted the land split.

Israel is Born 1947 – Divided into Jewish state, Arab state, and UN-run Jerusalem. Day after Israel declared independence, 6 Arab nations attack = Unsuccessful. Counterattack with allies = Successful. End of 1948 - Arab state is nearly gone. Palestinians pushed into Gaza Strip, West Bank, and Golan Heights. Is this ½ now? Jews kicked out of all Arab states, move to Israel
