Step 1—Extemp: Be in the KNOW Watch and read the news Follow AP updates Subscribe to RSS feeds and sources that synthesize news (i.e. The Drudge Report)

Step 2—Extemporaneous Speaking: Files Articles with information on current events Newspapers and magazines, research studies, etc. Must be entire article—can’t “cut” important quotes or statistics May be highlighted, but each article must be highlighted in only one color May be filed into topic areas

Step 3—Extemp: Practice Questions and Prep Give students three questions and have them pick one Weekly questions and quizzes http://speechgeek.com/extemp/ http://speechgeek.com/extemp/ 30 minutes to prep a 7 minute speech

Step 4—Extemp: Speech One notecard allowed in CHSAA competition No notecard allowed in NFL competition 7 minutes Restate and answer the question—thesis Organized like a paper—intro, body, conclusion Movement to emphasize points

Step 1—Original Oratory: Pick a topic Something the student cares about Original piece by the student Informative, persuasive, eulogy, etc. Look for different angles

Step 2—OO: Research Various sources Max 150 quoted words MLA in-text and bibliography (required for NFL) Personal stories MUST be true

Step 3—OO: Write, Revise, Memorize Max 10 minutes, but save some time for blocking Not impromptu—must be delivered consistently throughout a meet Must be memorized—no scripts for either CHSAA or NFL

Step 4—OO: Blocking No props or costumes Gestures and movement suggest action as well as emphasis
