4 NOTES Conflict happens because of disagreements between races, ethnicities, political ideologies, nationalism, and religion. Civil disobedience is not following the laws and rules but doing it in a way that passes no harm on to someone else. People who respond with violence are generally heard faster, but the response if often negative and uses even more violence. Civil disobedience lasts longer and it breeds respect from others.

5 GROUP WORK 1. Identify whether the example is civil disobedience or a violent response. 2. Write a sentence that explains what type of response to conflict it is (from the first step) and the nature of the conflict (race, ethnicity, religious, etc).

15 INDEPENDENT WORK Using your notes, your Venn Diagram, and your knowledge of social studies, write a minimum two paragraph essay that compares and contrasts civil disobedience and violent responses. Make sure you use examples to fully describe both types of responses to conflict. Then, explain which one you think is most effective and why.

If you were living in a place where you didn’t have the freedom to decide where your life was headed because the government had so much control, what would you use – civil disobedience or violence? Explain. (3-4 sentences)
