Vocabulary Unit 1 ELA 8 General Remember, a good a sentence— Begins with a capital letter Ends with punctuation. ? ! Contains at least eight words In this unit, please show me that you can write and use the words a lot correctly.

1.abstract— not easily seen or understood The abstract concept was difficult for a lot of students to understand. Lola enjoys abstract artwork because she can interpret it in a lot of different ways. A lot of the equations were too abstract for everyone except the teacher.

2. bias— prejudice; preconceived notion; favoritism The store owner showed a lot of bias toward the boy with tattoos all over his arms and would not hire him. Our teacher has a lot of bias for the girls and lets them leave the classroom more often. A lot of people believe the media has a bias toward certain politicians.

3.capacity— the ability to receive or contain There is a lot of capacity in an Excursion limo compared to a Corvette. A lot of people didn’t believe the cafeteria could hold a capacity of 150. A gallon container has the capacity to hold a lot of ounces of milk, but it cannot hold more than 128.

4. deduce— draw a conclusion; realize Sherlock Holmes could look at a lot of clues and quickly deduce who the culprit was. A lot of us were able to deduce she was sad since she was crying. You went to a lot of trouble to deduce the answer to the difficult equation.

5. emerge— appear; come into view In a lot of stories, the villain will emerge from the fog. We watched a lot of gophers emerge from holes in the ground. The naval crew felt a lot of emotions when their submarine finally emerged.

6. facilitate— to help (something) run more smoothly; to help cause The free trip incentive facilitates a lot more sales during our fundraiser. Knowing the rules will facilitate a lot of students to behave appropriately. A lot of people believe that getting up early and not rushing to catch the bus often facilitates having a good day.

7. generate— create or produce Niagara Falls generates power for a lot of homes. Brainstorming generated a lot of ideas for the writing assignment. Advertising the dance generated a lot of ticket sales. The generator will produce power in a lot of different appliances.

8. hence— therefore; thus; as a result I was running late for school; hence, I did not have a lot of time to eat breakfast. We did poorly on the quiz; hence, our teacher gave us a lot of practice worksheets. I’m very sleepy; hence, I hope to get a lot of sleep tonight. Hence, To his dog, every man is Napoleon; hence the constant popularity of dogs. --Aldous Huxley

9. ideology— beliefs or principles A lot of people share the ideology that you should treat others as you wish to be treated. A lot of the ideologies we hold in the United States are outlined in the Bill of Rights. The ideology that you must work hard to succeed motivates a lot of people.

10.justify— rationalize or defend Bob justified his lateness to class by explaining he dropped a lot of his books in the hall. A lot of students try to justify being unprepared by saying they left their work at home. I cannot justify a lot of the mean things I said to my sisters when I was a teenager.
