2 Important Buildings Shodfriars Hall was built in the 15 th Century and was restored in 1874. It has been used for different activities namely a theatre. Today it is used for shops, discos and a snooker hall. It is important because it is the biggest oldest timber framed building in Boston. The Dominicans known as the Black friars lived in The Blackfriars Art Centre. In 1965 the dining room was made into the theatre. The Guildhall was built in 1390 and used to be named Guild St Mary’s and was first used as a a chapel and a courthouse. In 1534 Henry VIII dissolved the monasteries. The Pilgrim Fathers were sent to the cells because they tried to escape to America because of their religion. There is a place in Boston America named after Boston Lincolnshire where the Pilgrims settled. It is now a museum and is one of the oldest buildings in Boston and hasn’t changed.

3 Introduction Boston used to be called Botolphston in the 7 th century but got shortened to Boston. However this story is disputed by some historians. Boston stump stands 272 feet tall and used to be used as a landmark for sailors. There used to be livestock for sale but now it has things like food,watches,clothes and jewellery.

4 Events On the 18th of July 1913 the town bridge opened in the town centre and every one had a day of school. In 1630 Boston, Lincolnshire, provided Boston, Massachlietts with its name. The men of St Botolph were granted a charter in 1204 by King John. In 1281 Boston suffered a fire, which destroyed much of the town.

5 Famous People John Cotton was born 29 th December 1585 and died 25 th December 1652.He was a clergyman for many years in Boston. John and his family left for the new world and named BOSTON in America after John and his family coming from Boston in England. Jean Ingelow was born on 13 th March 1820 and died in 1897. She wrote poetry, novels and children’s stories. She is remembered for the poem ‘The high tide on the coast of Lincolnshire’. W B Thomas was an artist who was born in Boston on 28 th May 1877. He was the son of the architect who designed the Fogarty feather factory in Trinity Street. Herbert Ingram was born on 27 th May 1811 in Boston. He started his own magazine and illustrated the London News and supported social reform.

6 Transport in Boston Horse drawn buses were used between 1662 and 1932. They were used for getting lots of people from one place to another. The used to use horse and carriages and old cars. They also used bikes. The horse and carriages were made of wood and leather. They used steam trains which were ran by coal. Today they a run by electricity. The bikes were made of wood a cheap metal or sometimes chrome the transport was slow but the air was less polluted then using petrol fumes. In June 1846 an Act of Parliament authorised a railway line between Boston, Stamford and Birmingham. In September 1847 the Sluice railway bridge was started. In 1848 the Great Northern railway and the East Lincolnshire railway were opened in Boston. The links made Boston accessible by railway to nearly every part of the country. Rich people took carriages and the poor people took a cart with one horse or a donkey pulling it. Trains came in the Victorian era and could move people, timber and goods. In the modern ages trains still carry things to and from the docks.
