2 The British parliament is based on Democracy. Democracy is when ordinary people have a say in what the government do. It allows voters to decide how their country is run and how money should be spent on roads, hospitals and schools. The people that are over 18 can vote but you need to be enrolled on the Electoral role. It is really important to be on the Electoral role because you can shout for your own opinion. The famous type of democracy is called representative democracy British citizens choose their representative and vote for them.

3 May 7 th 2015 was an important day for the country (UK) because it was the election day. Elections are when you vote for a political party to be the government : Edward Milliband David Cameron Nick Clegg Labour party Conservative party Liberal Democrat leader leader Party Leader After every 5 years elections begin. Everyone in England, who are above the age of 18 has a vote. It is important to be on the Electoral role because you can shout for your own opinions.

5 The Magna Carta is a great Charter. The Magna Carta gave rights to ordinary people. It is an important document in the journey towards democracy. For the first time, it set down a list of written rules that applied across England. In the past, the king and queen were really powerful. They could make laws without the consent of the people they ruled.

6 750 years ago the first parliament was introduced. The houses of Parliament are in London in Westminster The houses of Parliament is one of the most famous buildings in the country. 2015 marks the 750 th anniversary of England’s first Parliament. The clock tower known as Big Ben, after one of its 5 bells is the most famous part of the houses of Parliament.

7 There are 2 houses in the Parliament, house of commons and house of Lords. The house of commons is the most important, powerful one. House of commons is where the laws and MP’s (members of Parliament) are decided. The house of lords is when the lords make a rule by the Parliament. Laws tell us what people can or cannot do.

8 No women were allowed to vote before 1918. The suffragettes was the name given to the women who wanted to vote. The most famous suffragette was Emily Pankurst. This is Emily Pankurst. She stood up for women’s rights for voting. She was very brave and strong. She thought it was unfair that no women voted, but men could.So she stood up for womens’ rights! She was arrested a short time later but she still fought for women to vote and today they are allowed.

9 Transport! We would like to spend more money on transport like trains, buses, taxis and coaches for old people who are older than 60, allowing them to travel for free, letting them go out more often. Health! Have more money spent on health issues, e.g.- cancer, heart attacks and other diseases to help people to become better. Families! We will provide poor families more food banks and volunteers to help them, also give them free homes. This will help the people living in poverty.

10 Education! Open more schools with fully trained teachers. Spread schools all over Burton so people don’t need to walk more than 5 miles. Transport! Free transport for people over the age of 50. Free wheel chairs for people with a walking stick to make it safer. Health! Give medicine to all elderly people who are sick or for everyone who has cancer. (In Britain)
