Reading Success Lab Software: An Integrated Approach to Assessing and Strengthening Reading and Math Skills James M. Royer, PhD Department of Psychology University of Massachusetts And President, Reading Success Lab royer@psych.umass.edu www.readingsuccesslab.com

The Components of the Reading Success Lab System I. The Assessment Module A.Measures the speed and accuracy of performance for a variety of reading and math tasks II. The Skill Builder (Intervention) Module A. Develops fluent (fast and accurate) word identification and math fact retrieval skills III. The Designer Module A. Allows the development of assessment tasks and intervention tasks using local materials and local voices (All Modules Available For Single Computer or a Network)

The Assessment Module Measures Speed and/or Accuracy of:  Phonological Awareness  Letter Naming  Word Naming  Nonword Naming  Activation of Word Meaning  Sentence Understanding  Listening Comprehension  Reading Comprehension  Addition  Subtraction  Multiplication  Division

The Assessment Module (Cont): Reading Assessments Available in the Following Levels:  Kindergarten- First Grade  Grades 3-5  Grades 6-8  High School and Adult Assessments can be used to:  Diagnose Learning Difficulties  Track Educational Progress  Create Comprehensive Assessment and Progress Reports

The Skill Builder (Intervention) Module: Designed to:  Develop Automatic Letter and Word Recognition Skills  Develop Automatic Math Fact Skills in Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division Can be Used in Two Modes:  A Scorer Present Mode Where Someone More Skilled than the Student Scores Accuracy  A Student Self-Scoring Mode where the Student Practices Alone

After a Practice Session the Student Receives Immediate Feedback

Skill Builder Intervention Materials Available in English:  Letter Naming  Word Families  Grades 1-8  Subject Matter Materials: Social Studies Biology Chemistry Physics  Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication Division

The Skill Builder Module Also Contains a.WAV File Recorder and Editor that can be Used to:  Record Reading Samples at Periodic Intervals  These Samples Can be Used to Document Initial Skills and Reading Progress  Create Auditory Records that can Later be Analyzed for Reading Rate, Miscues and other Elements of Text Reading

The Designer Module: Designed to:  Facilitate the Creation of Assessment and Intervention Materials in Any Written Language and Utilizing any Spoken Language for Content and Task Instructions  Allows Control of Presentation Features such as Font, Color, Presentation Intervals, and Response Source

Results for Interventions:  Studies in the U.S. show gains in overall word reading performance for regularly spelled words  Studies also show gains in reading comprehension  Studies in Australia show mathematics gains on both experimenter generated problem solving tests and on national standardized tests

Software Marketed to:  Primary Market in U.S. to Parents and Schools  Used in Approximately 50 Australian Schools to Develop Fluent Reading and Math Skills  Several Users in Singapore, One of Whom is Creating a Version of the System in Chinese  Trinidad and Tobago is Negotiating Purchase of the System for Widespread Use in the Public School System  Software has Been Used for Research Purposes in Haiti, Burkina Faso, Nigeria, and India
