POWER WINDOWS COLUMBIA BASIN COLLEGE Automotive Technology

COMPONENTS n Master Switch n Individual Switch n Drive Motors n Rack and Pinion Flexible Strip n Safety Switch n Window Regulator

SATURN POWER WINDOW

NORMALLY OPEN SWITCH n Powered separately by circuit breaker n Normally used with two field coil motor n Motor is grounded n Tested with Jumper wires or test light

NORMALLY CLOSED SWITCH n Commonly used in most cars n Used with insulated system. n Receives separate power from ignition n Use jumper wires to test system Lab 356 and 357

MASTER CONTROL SWITCH n On Driver’s Door n System grounded through Master Switch if PM Motor n Safety Lock n Ignition must be on. n Must use Continuity Chart to Test Page 354C and 356C

WINDOW MOTOR CIRCUIT

DRIVE MOTORS n Permanent Magnet –most are insulated n Two Field Winding Motor –opposite windings –motor is grounded n TAPE DRIVE –Cable Drive Page 353C

DIRECT DRIVE MOTOR Page 354C

WINDOW REGULATOR Assist Up Spring n Less Amps used to raise window n Dangerous when servicing!

WIRING CIRCUITS Page 356C

ONE TOUCH SYSTEM n Most makers use this system n Electronically controlled by “Power Window Control Module” n Less than.3 sec, window travels all the way down n More than.3 sec, window only travels until you let off switch Page 359 Classroom

DIAGNOSE IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME n Think about the circuit you are diagnosing. n Get a plan of action through reasoning n Use the Schematic of the System

DIAGNOSIS n Broken Wire in Jamb n Sluggish Operation n Excessive Voltage Drop n Jumper Leads n Binding Linkage n Lubrication is Important!

Check Switch Operation Pg 406 Lab

Check for Power at Motor

Component Replacement n Safety First!! n Cleanliness n Make sure diagnosis is correct. n Verify diagnosis before motor replace n Verify Repair (Is problem taken care of?)

DEMONSTRATION

SHOP EXERCISE n Find a Power Window equipped vehicle. n Get a Power Window Schematic for the car you are working on. n Verify type of system you are working on. (Identify switch type and terminals) n Perform Switch test with jumper wires as applicable. (See Page 405 & 406 in Lab manual for a guide.)
