Printmaking began around 100AD in China, shortly after paper was invented. Writings were rubbed onto the print so that scholars could study their scriptures. This helped Buddhism spread from India to China.

The Diamond Sutra was the earliest woodcut to combine the text with an image. Its considered the earliest known book as well from 868 ad.

The first woodcuts in the Western world were not made until the 15 th Century in Germany, France, and Italy. The earliest images were for playing cards. Clergy also used them for devotional purposes.

Japanese prints by the 19 th century artist Hokusai were discovered in Paris and created a wave of love for Asian culture known as Japonisme. This had a huge influence on modern art. Katsushika Hokusai. multicolor woodblock print, "The Great Wave Off Kanagawa" (original was created between 1823- 1829) 36 views of Mount Fuji: Red Fuji. 1830.
