WHERE IS ECOSYSTEM LOCATED? Near Canada In the Northern hemisphere Cover about one – fifth of Earth’s surface
3
DESCRIBE THE ABIOTIC FACTORS OF YOUR ECOSYSTEM 50 degrees Fahrenheit or colder Winters are 6 to 10 months The sun does not rise for several months There are two seasons: winter and summer
4
PRODUCER: LICHEN. HOW DOES YOUR PRODUCER RELY ON OTHER ORGANISMS IN THE TUNDRA TO SURVIVE? Soak up water and chemicals from air Fungi gives lichen a home Relies on fungi for water and minerals Relies on fungi for protection from sunlight
5
HOW DO OTHER ORGANISMS OF YOUR ECOSYSTEM RELY ON YOUR PRODUCER TO SURVIVE? Caribou and Reindeer eat lichen Springtails (tiny insects) live inside Lichen Musk Ox eats lichen Lemmings eat lichen Grizzled Mantid (tiny insect) hides on lichen
6
CHOOSE ONE BIOTIC OR ABIOTIC FACTOR IN YOUR ECOSYSTEM & DESCRIBE HOW A CHANGE IN ONE OF THESE COULD YOUR ECOSYSTEM. Change: Global warming Global warming is a having a serious impact on polar bears Polar bears are staying on land and not eating as much Seals will overpopulate because bears are not eating them
7
HOW DO HUMANS AFFECT YOUR ECOSYSTEM? Use animal fur for clothes (shirts, pants, coats, and hats etc.) Polar plants are eaten and harmed with pollution from nearby factories Moss spores are used for fireworks it helps the fireworks explode in a flash
8
OTHER INTERESTING FACTS: A type of tundra grass is called cotton grass it looks like cotton balls The last ice age ended 10,000 years ago Arctic animals use polar plants for warmth and shelter
