Cell Division: Mitosis Objective: Recognize the phases of cell division, what type and how many cells are produced.
2
Vocabulary & Questions Cell cycle Mitosis Prophase Metaphase Anaphase Telophase What does a cell do when it gets too big? Which stage is the longest? Why? How many parent cells are there in mitosis? How many daughter cells are there in mitosis?
3
Can a cell get too big? Yes! When important molecules cannot make the distance of travel across a cell ……then it is time for that cell to divide.
4
Grow in size by increasing both in -size of cell -number of cells
5
Cells in your body do the same thing. Each cell divides every 24 hours 1x2x2x2x2x2x2x2=128 After one week each cell in your body goes from one to 128.

Which stage or phase do you notice most? Can you explain why?

3. The regular sequence of growth and division that cells undergo in a 24 hr. period. 4. Which stage of the cell cycle splits the nucleus into two new nuclei, putting them into two new daughter cells. 2. The phase where thread like chromatin in the cell’s nucleus begins to thicken and coil, like fishing line wrapping around a ball. 5. The phase where the chromosomes line up across the center of the cell. 1. The phase where chromosomes separate and move away from each other. 6. The phase where the cell starts to pinch off or a cell plate starts to form a cell wall. Mitosis quiz 7. What does a cell do when it gets too big? 8. Which stage of the cell cycle is the longest and why? 9. How many parent cells are in mitosis? 10. How many daughter cells in mitosis?
