1
Addition and Subtraction Involving Fractions, decimals, and mixed numbers Lesson 1 (3 rd 6 Weeks) TEKS 6.2B
2
Adding/Subtracting Decimals Line up decimals, add zeros at the end of the numbers so each one has the same number of decimal places Add & subtract like whole numbers, regrouping as needed. Bring decimal straight down in the answer.
3
EX: Find the difference between 33.5 and 8.35 33.5 - 8.35 0 4 1 1 5. 1 2 5 2
4
+/- Fractions & Mixed Numbers If the fractions have the same denominator, add/subtract the numerators and use the same denominator. EX: 6 17 + 8 = 6 + 8 17 14 17 =
5
If the fraction have unlike denominators, rewrite them as fractions with a common denominator. Then add/subtract the numerators and use the common denominator. When adding/subtracting mixed numbers the whole-number and fractional parts may need to be regrouped. If necessary, simplify the answer.
6
EX: 1 8 4 3 + x 1 = x 2 = 8 1 6 8 1 + 6 = 7 7 8
7
EX: 2 3 8 5 - x 8 = x 3 = 16 24 15 24 1 16 – 15 = 1
8
EX: 10 6 2 15 x 2 = x 5 = 30 20 10 - 30 10 ÷ = 1 3
9
EX: 4 1 2 2 5 3 x 5 = + 20 5 x 5 = x 4 = 8 13 20 5
10
EX: 1 4 8 9 6 3 - 18 x 2 = x 3 = 8 18 3 1 = 18 + 3 = 21 18 7 4 13 21
