NOAA Fisheries Mission Stewardship of the Nation’s living marine resources through science-based conservation and management Promotion of healthy ecosystems Stewardship of the Nation’s living marine resources through science-based conservation and management Promotion of healthy ecosystems

Large Marine Ecosystems (LMEs ) NOAA/NMFS is involved with defining LMEs, and is working towards developing guidelines for their stewardship

US Exclusive Economic Zone

Economic Benefits Landings by US commercial fisheries average 4.3 million metric tons, valued at about $3.4 billion US recreational fisheries provide food and recreation to over 17 million Americans, who spend $20 billion per year on angling Landings by US commercial fisheries average 4.3 million metric tons, valued at about $3.4 billion US recreational fisheries provide food and recreation to over 17 million Americans, who spend $20 billion per year on angling

Rationale For Satellite Remote Sensing In Fisheries Understanding the changing ocean Variations in marine environmental conditions affect –Distribution, abundance, and availability of living marine resources (LMRs) –Influence the vulnerability and catchability of fish stocks Understanding the changing ocean Variations in marine environmental conditions affect –Distribution, abundance, and availability of living marine resources (LMRs) –Influence the vulnerability and catchability of fish stocks

Ocean Features Important to Fisheries Ocean ‘fronts’, boundaries, ‘edges’ Mesoscale circulation patterns, e.g., eddies, meanders, ‘loops’ Convergence zones Subsurface thermal structure, e.g. MLD, thermocline Ocean surface winds Ocean currents Wave heights Ocean ‘fronts’, boundaries, ‘edges’ Mesoscale circulation patterns, e.g., eddies, meanders, ‘loops’ Convergence zones Subsurface thermal structure, e.g. MLD, thermocline Ocean surface winds Ocean currents Wave heights

Fisheries Applications of Satellite data Optimizing sea-going fisheries activities Satellite SST currently being used by NOAA Fisheries to mitigate interactions between endangered sea turtles and longline fisheries Defining essential habitats for incorporation into an ecosystem approach to management - Lobster fishery - Salmon habitat Potential applications with GOES-R Optimizing sea-going fisheries activities Satellite SST currently being used by NOAA Fisheries to mitigate interactions between endangered sea turtles and longline fisheries Defining essential habitats for incorporation into an ecosystem approach to management - Lobster fishery - Salmon habitat Potential applications with GOES-R

Lobster Management Lobster fishery is the most valuable fishery on the Atlantic Coast, with annual landings of ~ $300M In the past 15 years lobster landings have more than doubled

Lobster Management Lobster larvae are planktonic and their distribution and recruitment are highly dependent on oceanographic temperatures and currents There is currently a NOAA/NESDIS funded project (A. Thomas) to use satellite data to better understand lobster populations in the Penobscot Bay, to help sustain the fishery

Potential Fisheries Applications of GOES-R Ocean color used in conjunction with SST will be an important component in defining and monitoring essential fish habitat (EFH) The temporal resolution of existing satellite-derived products used in marine resource management can be improved to better account for regional ocean dynamics Higher temporal and spatial resolution satellite data will enhance the development and implementation of new products for management of coastal fisheries (e.g. Pacific Salmon and Atlantic Lobster fisheries) Ocean color used in conjunction with SST will be an important component in defining and monitoring essential fish habitat (EFH) The temporal resolution of existing satellite-derived products used in marine resource management can be improved to better account for regional ocean dynamics Higher temporal and spatial resolution satellite data will enhance the development and implementation of new products for management of coastal fisheries (e.g. Pacific Salmon and Atlantic Lobster fisheries)
