1 Broadening Horizons Facilitated by: Course Tutor Giselle Ruoss Course Assistant Frances Saggers

2 DAY 2: Broadening Horizons  How BIG is your world?  Is it too quiet and you want to meet more people?  Is it too busy and you would love some ‘you time?  Did you leave school with no qualifications and want to brush up on existing skills or learn new ones?  Would you like to travel or find a new interest?

3 ICE BREAKER – HOW BIG IS YOUR WORLD? Do you travel? Where do you go? Yes or No? How do you like to spend your spare time? Who do you like spending time with? Is there anything that you are doing now that you would like to do more of? Is there something in your life that you are NOT doing but would like to do? What prevents you?

4 TASK 3:BELIEVE IN YOURSELF – WHAT ARE YOU GOOD AT?

5 AGE IS JUST A NUMBER? (talking)  What is your attitude to age?  Is it just a number?  Are you ever too old to learn?  Do you believe the older you are, the wiser you are?  Are you ever too old to do something new?  What does retirement mean to you?

6 TASK 3:SETTING GOALS - GROW G = GOAL Set yourself a goal. What do you want to achieve by when? R = REALISTIC Is your goal realistic in terms of the resources and the time you need to make the goal a reality? O = OPPORTUNITY What opportunities are available to you? W = WANT If you want something enough you will succeed!

7 TASK 4: DREAMS (BIG GOALS) AND NIGHTMARES  In order to know what job or career you want it helps to know what you don’t want!  Let us put it to you in this way what would be your dream job and why?  Note: Nothing is too ridiculous or too extreme! Sometimes it is from these ‘crazy notions’ that reality can happen!

8 EXAMPLE: FRANCES’S DREAM JOB (BIG GOAL)  Working as a personal assistant for someone famous (Peter Andre)  Working in the head office (no travel)  Organise diaries  Arrange appearances including make-up and hair  Set hours 9am – 5pm  All school holidays off

9 EXAMPLE: FRANCES’S NIGHTMARE JOB  Having to deal with Katie Price (Peter Andre’s ex wife)  Travelling abroad with work and staying away from home for long periods of time  Working shift work and weekends

10 EXAMPLE: GISELLE’S DREAM JOB (BIG GOAL)  Working as an educational psychologist or teacher  Travelling abroad as part of my job  Helping people to realises their goals  Helping children with their education  Running my own business  A challenge

11 EXAMPLE: GISELLE’S NIGHTMARE JOB  Accountancy  Running my own business  Office work

12 DREAMS AND NIGHTMARES JOBS  Inspiring and motivating people to be the best they can be  A job involving working with children and young people Running my own business Accountancy Running my own business Office work

14 TASK 5:SMART GOALS  Once you have your BIG goals in mind its time to think SMART!  S – Specific What specific goals do you want to achieve by when?  M – Measurable How will you measure the success of your goal? A - Achievable Is your goal manageable given the resources and the skills you have? R - Realistic – Have you set your goals too high or too low? T - Time Is your goal achievable in the time you have set yourself?

15 LIFESTYLE CHOICES AND YOUR JOB  Making sure you have the right job that fits your lifestyle is essential. From our examples you can see that your dream job can also be a nightmare at times too.  BUT why do you still choose to do a job you don’t like sometimes!  WHY? The answer is because all jobs have some aspects that you don’t like, but the majority of the job you enjoy  OR  You are prepared to put in the hard work and effort now for a bigger reward in your retirement!

16 TASK 6: ESSENTIAL, DESIREABLE, LIKES OR DISLIKES, SKILLS & QUALITIES  So what is essential to you in any job you choose?  What MUST happen because otherwise you would be unable to work?  What is desirable in a job something that you would love to be able to do but it is not essential?  Likes and Dislikes  What do you like or dislike about a job?  Knowing this helps you determine whether or not a job is for you?  What skills or qualities do you have that you can offer to a job?

17 TASK 7: ACHIEVING GOALS – THE LADDER  Once you have worked out your Dream or your BIG goal, it is easier to think about how you will get there by breaking it down into steps  Think about a ladder  Each step is a small goal  Write each small goal on each step  This is an easy way to see what you have achieved

19 TASK 8:PRIORATIZING GOALS  You might have a list of things you want to achieve. For example:-  Get a job  Go on holiday  Do the shopping (for the week)  Empty the bins  Visit family or friends  Make a telephone call  If you wanted to do all of the things on this list, what order would you do them in and why?

20 REMOVING BARRIERS WHEREVER POSSIBLE  Believe in yourself and your own abilities – Think positive  Try new things  Ask for support and encouragement to achieve your goals  Think of the things that you have already achieved in life – this will give you more confidence to go on and succeed with your BIG GOAL  Take things one step at a time  Make time – if the goal is important enough to you  Earn the money or save up for a treat when you can afford it

21 TASK 9: SKILLS GAPS  In order to achieve you goal you might have to learn new things:-  Get advise from other people  Do some research (find out some information)  Learn new skills

22 EDUCATION  You are never too old to learn  You can go to college, university or evening classes  Learn from home  With a tutor from WEA  Learn things just by talking to other people  Learn for fun  Or take exams  Learn at work

23 WORK, LIFE, BALANCE?

24 TIME AND MONEY  Often in life, if you have the time you don’t have enough money  Or if you have the money you don’t have the time  If something is important enough to you, you will make time to do it!  Save up or work to get the money to achieve your goal  In the last slide we spoke about removing barriers, sometimes if you don’t believe in yourself achieving your goal will be even harder!  YOU ARE GOOD ENOUGH AND YOU WILL SUCCEED!

25 TEAMWORK & DEADLINES  Team work is often important in work and life. Working together means you can often get more done in a shorter space of time.  This is because you are not working alone as other people are helping you.  For example, if you need to organise a meeting or a party on 9 th of August 2013 for 50 people to and you need to organise the venue as well.  However, if someone else is arranging the venue then this task becomes much easier because you can share what needs to be done

26 WORKING BY YOURSELF OR MAKING DECISIONS  As well as working as a team, working by yourself is important too.  Depending on the type of work you do, it may not always be possible to ask someone what to do next, so you may need to make some decisions for yourself

27 USING THE INTERNET  Using the internet is a useful and effective way to communicate with people for both social and business reasons.  People you don’t even know can help or buy from you over the internet  You can speak to people both at home and abroad using the internet – this means that you can communicate with friends you haven’t seen for years
