Language Arts Reading comprehension – short stories, novels and STAAR prep. Writing skills: Writing Process (prewrite, draft, revise, edit, publish); Using voice; “sparkle” words, fluency, organization, conventions Spelling: word list will be comprised of students’ misspelled words from their writing. Will receive list on a Thursday and quiz will be the next Thursday. Not every week. Grading: Major grades 60% (tests, major writing assignments: My Name Story-Due this Friday, book projects) Quizzes/Minor writing assignments 25% Daily Work/Homework 15% Late work (highest grade 70) No extra credit offered

Academic LA (1st, 4th, 6th periods)
Reading Requirements- must read one book at home per 9 weeks in addition to regular coursework. Students may choose their own book (novel they are interested in). Book must be 6th grade reading level. There will be book projects and/or assignments given to check. Students will receive a grading rubric ahead of time. This will start in October. The first project will be due at the end of the first 9 weeks. No Reading Logs.

Pre-AP (5th and 7th periods)
Differences in expectation/depth of thinking required Differences in students - must enjoy reading; scored high on STAAR from 5th grade; highly self-motivated to learn and do quality work. Reading Requirements – Must read one book at home per month, starting in October. Students may choose their own book (novel they are interested in). There will be book projects due monthly in addition to other course work – 1st one due end of October – students will receive a copy of the grading rubric ahead of time. No Reading Logs.

Middle School vs. Elementary
Yes, they are in 6th – but they are still 11 – learning to become more responsible for themselves. Your child may need your help at first to stay on top of homework and assignments/ staying organized. It is a big difference from Elementary. All students need to be checked – *Look at my website calendar or the Silver Team calendar for homework assignments and class work each day. They may change as the week progresses. Homework Help - Room 775 from 7:30-8:30 and from 4:00-5:00. Must have note from parents for morning. Z-Hall -required when student does not complete homework. They will call home to tell parents; must stay after school that day to complete. Late bus at 5:00.
